Irish Youth Wind Ensemble to Dazzle Ardee with August Concert
Over 70 Young Musicians Set to Perform Wind Band Classics. The Irish Youth Wind Ensemble is set to perform at the Bohemian Centre in Ardee, promising an unforgettable evening of music. Over 70 of Ireland’s finest young wind, brass, and percussion musicians will take the stage this August Bank Holiday weekend as part of the ensemble’s summer tour.
The concert will take place on Friday, 2 August 2024, at 7pm, featuring a thrilling programme of wind band classics spanning decades, including Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story Symphonic Dances and Alfred Reed’s El Camino Real.
Renowned conductor and Artistic Director of IYWE, Ronan O’Reilly, who also directs the Artane School of Music, will lead the ensemble. O’Reilly noted, “This year’s music programme has been selected to showcase the technical and musical abilities of some of Ireland’s best young wind, brass, and percussion players.”
In preparation for the national tour, the ensemble—comprising highly skilled young musicians from across Ireland—will engage in an intensive week-long residential course at the University of Limerick. This training will be conducted by some of Ireland’s finest brass, wind, and percussion tutors.
Founded in 1985 by James Cavanagh and Fred O’Callaghan, the Irish Youth Wind Ensemble has seen over a thousand young musicians participate over the years. The ensemble’s mission is to provide young players with the opportunity to study, perform, and experience music composed specifically for wind ensembles, presenting pieces rarely heard by Irish audiences.
Irish Youth Wind Ensemble is not only a premier platform for young musicians to showcase their talents but also a unique venue for many Irish and world premieres of wind ensemble compositions. Next year marks the ensemble’s 40th anniversary—a testament to the passion and vision of its founders, the dedication of its members, and the commitment of its numerous supporters.
Tickets are priced at €20, with concessions available for €10, and can be purchased at the door. This event is presented in association with the Irish Association of Youth Orchestras and is funded by The Arts Council.
