Louth County Council has announced the temporary closure of sections of the M1 motorway between Junctions 18 and 14 over a six-week period to facilitate essential road works. The closures, which will occur at night, are necessary for the maintenance and improvement of the motorway and will be carried out by Celtic Roads Group (CRG).

Details of the Closures

The closures will affect both the northbound and southbound carriageways at different times, with only one carriageway closed at any given time. The works are scheduled to take place between September 23rd and November 3rd, with the following closures planned:

Southbound Closure (Junction 18 to Junction 16): This section will be closed for two nights during the specified period. Diversions will be in place via the N52 Inner Relief Road from Junction 18 to Junction 16. Closures will occur between 7:30 PM and 5:30 AM.

Northbound Closure (Junction 16 to Junction 18): This section will be closed for two nights. Diversions will follow the N52 Inner Relief Road from Junction 16 to Junction 18. The closures will take place between 8:30 PM and 6:30 AM.

Southbound Closure (Junction 16 to Junction 14): This section will be closed for four nights. Traffic will be diverted via the N52 Ardee, N33, and back to the M1 at Junction 14. Closures will be enforced between 7:30 PM and 5:30 AM.

Northbound Closure (Junction 14 to Junction 16): This section will be closed for five nights. Diversions will use the N33 and N52 Ardee, reconnecting with the M1 at Junction 16. The closure will be in effect from 8:30 PM to 6:30 AM.

Impact and Contingency

The total duration of the roadworks is expected to last for six weeks. During this time, sections of the motorway mainline, interchange slip roads, roundabouts, and side roads may be closed. Louth County Council has emphasized that every effort will be made to minimize the number and duration of closures. A contingency plan is in place to account for possible weather-related disruptions, with the goal of completing the works within the six-week timeframe or sooner.

Motorists are advised to follow the diversion routes and allow for extra travel time during the closures. The council encourages drivers to stay informed by checking updates on AA Roadwatch and listening to LMFM Radio for the latest notifications.
