Man Caught with Arsenal of Weapons in Ardee Faces Explosives Charges
A man accused of possessing a significant cache of firearms and ammunition in Ardee has been further charged with explosives-related offenses.
Mark McCourt (34), of Edencrieve, Newry, Co. Down, has been in custody since July 2024. He appeared in court accused of having a semi-automatic rifle, rounds of ammunition, and various firearm components at John Street, Blackstick, Ardee, on July 19, 2024. Among the items seized were six AR-15 assault rifles, 12 semi-automatic 9mm handguns, and a silencer.
On January 8, a detective from the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau brought additional charges against Mr. McCourt. These new allegations include the importation of firearms, ammunition, and explosives into the State between February 10, 2023, and July 19, 2024, under Section 72 of the Criminal Justice Act, which pertains to involvement in a criminal organization.
The court heard that Mr. McCourt made no reply when charged.
Solicitor Paula Tiernan expressed surprise at the new direction from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), noting that the defendant had already signed guilty pleas for 23 original charges and was awaiting sentencing in the circuit court.
Judge Stephanie Coggans remanded Mr. McCourt in custody to January 15, when a decision on the trial venue will be made. Legal aid was granted for the new charges.
