Michael Dunlop Crowned Irish Motorcyclist of the Year at Star-Studded Belfast Awards

Michael Dunlop added another chapter to his storied career on Friday night as he was crowned Irish Motorcyclist of the Year at the Adelaide Irish Motorbike Awards in Belfast. The Ballymoney racing legend was hoisted high alongside the iconic trophy named after his uncle, Joey Dunlop, cementing his place as the torchbearer of the Dunlop dynasty.

It marks the second time the 35-year-old has claimed the prestigious accolade, his first coming a decade ago in recognition of his record-breaking 2014 Isle of Man TT season.

Dunlop celebrated a double triumph on the night, also receiving the International Road Racer of the Year award at the glittering ceremony held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

His remarkable 2023 season saw him surpass Joey’s long-standing Isle of Man TT record, clinching four victories for a second consecutive year to reach an unprecedented tally of 29 wins. His triumphs included equaling Joey’s benchmark of 26 wins in the opening Supersport race before breaking the record in the Supertwin event.

Reflecting on his achievements, Dunlop said:

“To get past Joey’s record is a privilege. It’s a personal drive to keep the family name at the top. Joey set the standard, and it’s humbling to continue his legacy. Winning the first Supersport race to equal Joey’s record was massive, but breaking it was a testament to the team’s hard work.”

The Ballymoney rider nearly made it five victories at the TT but was thwarted by a visor malfunction during the Superbike race, ultimately finishing fourth after posting the event’s fastest lap at 135.97mph on his Hawk Racing Honda.

Other highlights from the awards included:

Hall of Fame Induction: Michael Swann, 12-time Irish champion.

Team of the Year: TAS Racing, following Davey Todd’s dominant season.

Short Circuit Rider of the Year (UK): Dublin’s Jack Kennedy after claiming his fifth British Supersport title.

Special Recognition Award: Phil Marron for guiding Toprak Razgatlioglu to the World Superbike Championship with BMW.

The North West 200 was celebrated as Event of the Year, while Ballymoney once again took center stage as the home of road racing greatness.

As Dunlop looks ahead to future successes, his motivation remains deeply rooted in family tradition, striving to honor and extend the legendary Dunlop legacy on the world stage.
