UPDATE Gardaí Complete Drogheda House Search in Kyran Durnin Murder Investigation UPDATE
Gardaí investigating the disappearance and murder of Kyran Durnin have completed a search at a house in Drogheda.
Authorities have confirmed that, for “operational purposes,” the results of the search will not be disclosed at this time. The primary aim of the search was to uncover any evidence that might provide further insight into Kyran’s current whereabouts or what happened to him.
Kyran, who would now be eight years old, was reported missing by his grandmother on August 30 last year. Investigators later determined that he had been taken out of his school in Dundalk at the end of May 2022, when he was six years old, and has not been seen alive since.
Gardaí are continuing to appeal to the public for any information related to the case. A Garda spokesperson issued a statement urging individuals to come forward with any details, no matter how minor they may seem.
“Please do not assume that the investigation team already knows the information you may have,” the spokesperson said. “Any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, will be welcomed by the investigation team and treated in the strictest confidence.”
Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact the Garda Investigation Team at Drogheda Garda Station on 041 987 4200, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or speak with any member of An Garda Síochána.
The investigation remains ongoing.
The intensive search operation at a Drogheda property and its adjoining garden has resumed this morning as part of the ongoing investigation into the disappearance and murder of Kyran Durnin.
Kyran was last seen in 2022 at the age of six, and detectives believe he may have died over two years ago. The murder inquiry was launched last October after months of investigation failed to uncover any evidence that he was still alive.
Ongoing Search Efforts
For the past two days, Gardaí have concentrated their search efforts on the back garden of the property in Drogheda. A mini-digger was used to excavate the area, following the dismantling of a large shed in the garden.
Gardaí have also deployed chainsaws and other heavy machinery to clear overgrown shrubbery, while a drone has been used to capture aerial images. These images will help investigators analyze potential changes in the garden’s landscape, soil movements, or disturbances.
Yesterday, Kyran’s father—who is not a suspect in the investigation—arrived at the search site and was visibly emotional as he observed the ongoing work.
Previous Searches & Investigation Developments
The last confirmed sighting of Kyran was in or around June 2022, but it was over two years later, in August 2024, that he was officially reported missing.
In late 2023, Gardaí conducted searches at another Drogheda property as well as a house in Dundalk where Kyran once lived. The results of those searches were not publicly disclosed for operational reasons.
Authorities have confirmed that people connected to the Drogheda property have been of interest in the case for some time.
Appeal for Information
Gardaí have reiterated that the purpose of this ongoing search is to gather any evidence that may provide answers regarding Kyran’s whereabouts or what happened to him.
The investigation remains active, and Gardaí continue to urge anyone with information—no matter how small—to come forward.
