Ardee News and Sport — Over 250 people gathered in Ardee Parish Centre on October 2nd, 2024, to celebrate Positive Ageing Week at a special event hosted by Age Friendly Louth. The Age Friendly Expo, organised by Louth County Council’s Age Friendly Louth programme, drew guests from across the county. The event was officially opened by Gavin Duffy, Age Friendly Ambassador for County Louth, who highlighted the positive aspects of ageing and the vital roles older adults play in families and communities.

In his opening remarks, Duffy emphasised the success of the Age Friendly programme in Louth, underscoring its commitment to promoting a positive approach to ageing. He spoke about the importance of celebrating older people’s contributions and embracing the vitality and opportunities that come with later life.

The expo featured key speakers addressing crucial topics, including combating ageism, the significance of staying active, and the importance of proper diet and hydration as we age. Speakers from the HSE, DKIT, and the Louth Older People’s Council (OPC) shared insights and advice on how to age healthily.

More than 30 service providers, community groups, and state agencies participated as exhibitors, offering information on safety, health, finance, technology, and community support. The event gave older adults a chance to connect with these organizations and access helpful resources to support their well-being.

Joe Grogan, Chairperson of the Louth Older People’s Council, said, “This is our third year having the expo in Ardee, and it was wonderful to see so many older people out and about, getting lots of information, ideas, and helpful tips around ageing well.”

Age Friendly Program Manager, Sinead McVerry, added, “Ageing well means something different to all of us, but it generally includes a positive attitude, maintaining social connections, and finding joy in life. This expo is a fantastic way to support those goals.”
