Build Works Underway for National Broadband Plan in Ardee Area
High-speed broadband connectivity on the way for almost 1,600 Louth homes
National Broadband Ireland (NBI), the company delivering the Government’s National Broadband Plan (NBP), has announced that construction is now underway to bring high-speed fibre broadband to nearly 1,600 premises in the Ardee area of County Louth. The works will cover the rural surrounds and townlands of Ardee, Stabannan, and Collon, marking a significant milestone in the effort to bridge Ireland’s digital divide.
Across County Louth, a total of 9,000 homes, businesses, farms, and schools fall within the State’s designated Intervention Area — the regions where commercial operators have not yet provided adequate high-speed broadband. Under the NBP, NBI will deliver minimum speeds of 500 megabits per second, supported by a €33 million Government investment, the largest infrastructural project in rural Ireland since rural electrification.
With the survey and design phases now completed, fibre cabling installation is progressing rapidly across the Ardee deployment area, bringing advanced connectivity closer to reality. A total of 1,577 premises are included in this stage, with services expected to go live by summer of next year.
Progress under the NBP is already visible in other parts of Louth. Over 5,400 premises across the county can now pre-order or order high-speed broadband, with 2,641 connections completed to date. Areas surrounding Dundalk and Drogheda were among the first to benefit, and further network build works are now continuing near the Togher deployment area, where an additional 1,600 premises are expected to be connected by the end of next year.
Residents are encouraged to sign up for NBI email notifications at nbi.ie to receive updates on rollout progress and availability for their specific addresses.
Speaking about the ongoing works, TJ Malone, Chief Executive Officer of National Broadband Ireland, said:
“Our teams are making excellent progress in County Louth, and we’re delighted to see fibre build works now underway in the Ardee deployment area. Our overarching goal is to improve digital connectivity across the country. With minimum internet speeds of 500 megabits per second, this new Fibre-to-the-Home network will play a pivotal role in sustaining local businesses and communities.”
As a wholesale network operator, NBI does not sell broadband directly to customers. Instead, it enables services through a range of Retail Service Providers (RSPs), giving end users the freedom to choose their preferred supplier. Currently, 72 RSPs have signed up to sell services on the NBI network™, with 66 already certified to provide connections.
