Ardee News and SportArdee Cancer Support Group Takes First Steps Towards New Facility with Virtual Walk/Run

The community of Ardee is being called into action as Ardee and District Cancer Support CLG kicks off its ambitious 2025 fundraising campaign. The organization’s first major event of the year, a Virtual 1000k Walk/Run, runs from Monday, January 6th, to Monday, February 3rd, with all proceeds going toward the establishment of a much-needed Cancer Support Centre in the town.

A Vision for the Future

Chairperson Rose McCusker shared the exciting news that the group has recently acquired the former Health Centre on Market Street. “Thanks to the incredible support from our community and various funding sources, we’ve been able to take this critical first step,” she said. “We’re now focusing on the next phase—renovating the property and building a welcoming, fully equipped Cancer Support Centre.”

Rose emphasized the importance of 2025 in achieving their goal, revealing that the group is currently in the process of applying for planning permission through Louth County Council. “This year will be pivotal for us,” she added. “We are determined to see this vision come to life, but we need the continued support of the community to make it happen.”

Get Involved in the Virtual Walk/Run

The Virtual 1000k Walk/Run is the first in a series of fundraising events planned for the year. Participants can sign up by visiting the Ardee and District Cancer Support Facebook page and leaving a comment under the post about the event. During the month-long challenge, walkers and runners are encouraged to share photos of themselves or their step counts to help the group track the collective distance of 1000 kilometers.

“This event is for everyone,” Rose said. “Whether you walk a few kilometers or go the extra mile, every step counts. We’re calling on individuals, families, and even businesses to join in. Together, we can achieve something truly extraordinary.”

How You Can Help

For those unable to participate in the walk/run, there are still plenty of ways to contribute. Donations, sponsorships, and volunteer efforts are all welcome. The group is also distributing sponsorship cards to encourage further community involvement.

A Community United

The establishment of a Cancer Support Centre in Ardee will provide vital services to those affected by cancer and their families, including counseling, information sessions, and holistic therapies.

“This project is for everyone in our community,” Rose said. “Cancer touches so many lives, and we want to create a place where people feel supported, understood, and cared for. Every step and every donation brings us closer to making this dream a reality.”

With a packed calendar of events planned for the year, the group is confident that 2025 will mark a turning point in their journey. Join the movement and help make a lasting difference for cancer patients and their families in Ardee.
