Louth County Council’s Ardee Garden Care and Repair Programme has been named the winner of the Best Green Sustainable Initiative at the prestigious Community and Council Awards, hosted by the Local Authority Members Association (LAMA).

This award underscores Louth County Council’s longstanding dedication to creating an age-friendly society in County Louth. As the first county in Ireland to receive Age-Friendly Accreditation from the WHO in 2008, Louth has continuously set the benchmark for embedding age-friendly principles in its services.

Launched in 2024 with the financial backing of Ardee Municipal District Councillors, the Ardee Garden Care & Repair Programme provides a free gardening service for older and vulnerable residents. This initiative enhances wellbeing, safety, and accessibility by maintaining outdoor spaces, ensuring they remain welcoming and manageable.

A true collaborative effort, the initiative is supported by Louth County Council, Ardee Tidy Towns, An Garda Síochána, Dee Hub, and Age Friendly Louth. By working together, these organisations are fostering a greener, more inclusive community while strengthening local connections.

Speaking about the achievement, Cathaoirleach of Ardee Municipal District, Cllr John Sheridan, said:

“This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of all those involved in making County Louth a leader in age-friendly and sustainable initiatives. The Ardee Garden Care & Repair Programme is a shining example of how community partnerships can make a real difference in people’s lives.”

Louth County Council continues to champion age-friendly and sustainable community initiatives, reinforcing its commitment to improving the quality of life for all residents.
