Ardee Student Honoured with Maynooth Scholarship
A former Ardee Community School student is among four talented students from County Louth who have been recognised for their exceptional Leaving Certificate results with prestigious Entrance Scholarships from Maynooth University.
The awards celebrate outstanding academic achievement, with each scholarship recipient earning 575 points or more in the Leaving Certificate examinations.
Ardee Student Among Top Achievers
Former Ardee Community School student Jack McCourt was honoured at the recent scholarship ceremony after achieving the high points required to qualify for the award.
Jack, who began his studies at Maynooth University in September 2025, is currently pursuing a BSc in Computer Science and Software Engineering (MH601).
He was one of four students from Louth recognised for their academic success.
Louth Students Celebrated
Alongside the Ardee student, three other former Louth pupils also received scholarships:
- Saoirse McDermott, formerly of Sacred Heart Secondary School in Drogheda, now studying BA Bachelor of Arts (MH101)
- Michelle Nowak, formerly of Coláiste Chú Chulainn in Dundalk, studying BA Psychology (MH106)
- Ogheneruno Okoro, formerly of Our Lady’s College, Greenhills in Drogheda, enrolled in BBS Business and Accounting (MH407)
Each student received a €1,000 Entrance Scholarship, which is automatically awarded through the CAO to first-year students who achieve 575 points or higher in the Leaving Certificate.
Celebrating Academic Excellence
The awards ceremony took place in early February and formed part of Maynooth University’s expanded Scholars Awards Night, which now celebrates both Entrance Scholars and Sports Scholars.
The event brought together students, families, teachers, university leaders and sports development officers to recognise the achievements of this year’s scholarship recipients.
Professor Ronan Farrell, Vice President Academic and Registrar at Maynooth University, said the awards highlight the institution’s commitment to supporting young talent.
“These scholarships represent more than financial support — they reflect our belief in the potential of young people and our commitment to helping them pursue their goals.”
Each scholar was presented with a bespoke piece of crystal in recognition of their achievements, while representatives from their schools received commemorative plaques.
Guests also enjoyed an evening of music and refreshments as part of the celebrations.
Supporting the Next Generation
In total, almost 100 scholarships were awarded during the event across several categories, including:
- Entrance Scholars
- Music Entrance Scholar
- W.A. Barrett Engineering Scholars
- Sports Scholars across GAA, rugby, soccer, golf and other sports
The expanded scholarship programme reflects Maynooth University’s focus on supporting students academically, culturally and athletically.
Looking Ahead
The recognition of Jack McCourt and the other Louth students highlights the strong academic achievements coming from schools across the county, including Ardee.
For students considering applying to Maynooth University, the institution has also announced Open Days on April 25th and June 27th 2026, running from 10am to 2pm.
Further details about scholarships and courses are available through the university’s official website.
For Ardee Community School and the wider town, the achievement is a proud reminder of the talent and dedication of local students as they take their next steps in higher education.
