Construction Underway on High-Speed Fibre Network in Rural Louth

National Broadband Ireland (NBI), the company rolling out the State’s National Broadband Plan (NBP), has officially commenced build works to bring high-speed broadband to nearly 1,600 homes, farms and businesses across the rural townlands of Ardee, Stabannan and Collon.

This milestone marks a significant step forward in delivering future-proofed digital infrastructure to some of the most underserved areas in County Louth. The fibre-to-the-home network will provide minimum speeds of 500 megabits per second, dramatically improving digital connectivity in these communities.

Major Investment of Broadband in Rural Louth

The Ardee deployment area forms part of the Government’s €33 million investment in County Louth under the NBP, which is the most significant development in rural infrastructure since electrification. In total, 9,000 premises in Louth are included in the State’s designated Intervention Area, which aims to bridge the digital divide in rural Ireland.

With survey and design phases completed, fibre installation is now actively underway for 1,566 premises in the Ardee area. Residents and business owners can expect to have access to high-speed broadband services by the end of next year, according to NBI.

A Boost for Local Economy and Community

TJ Malone, Chief Executive Officer of NBI Deployment, said:

“Our teams are making excellent progress in Co Louth, and we’re pleased to see fibre build works underway in the Ardee deployment area. Our overarching goal is to improve digital connectivity across the country. With a minimum internet speed of 500 megabits per second, this new Fibre-to-the-Home network will play a pivotal role in sustaining local businesses and communities.”

The expansion of broadband access is expected to boost economic opportunities, support remote work and education, and improve quality of life in rural communities.

Progress Already Visible in Other Parts of Louth

Elsewhere in the county, works have already been completed in areas around Dundalk and Drogheda, where 5,245 premises can now either order or pre-order their high-speed broadband service. Of these, 2,553 premises have already been connected.

NBI encourages residents and business owners to visit nbi.ie/map and enter their Eircode to check availability or pre-order eligibility.
