Irish MMA star Ciaran Clarke has suffered a devastating blow after being forced to withdraw from the Professional Fighters League (PFL) World Tournament due to a major knee injury.

The Drogheda native had been set to face Russia’s Kasum Kasumov in Florida on April 11th in the first round of the prestigious tournament. The competition, which crowns a Lightweight Tournament Champion and awards a $500,000 prize, was a huge opportunity for Clarke, who has built an impressive 10-0 professional record since turning pro in 2019.

Taking to social media, Clarke confirmed that he has sustained a ruptured MCL, an injury that required surgery and will sideline him for an extended period.

Irish MMA star Ciaran Clarke has suffered a devastating blow after being forced to withdraw from the Professional Fighters League (PFL) World Tournament due to a major knee injury.

“Unfortunately, I have to withdraw from the PFL World Tournament due to a ruptured MCL sustained during training. The injury required surgery to repair, and my focus is now on recovery and rehabilitation for the next 6-9 months,” Clarke stated.

Despite medical advice and concerns from loved ones, Clarke initially attempted to push through the injury, determined to compete in what he described as the biggest opportunity of his career. However, after careful consideration, he accepted that stepping away was the best decision.

“Competing against some of the best in the world means showing up at my absolute best—out of respect for my opponents and the sport itself. Pushing through could have made things worse, especially due to the nature of the tournament and the impact on my longevity,” Clarke explained.

Though disappointed, the 29-year-old remains optimistic about his future in the sport and believes this setback is part of a larger plan.

“I was so excited to travel to America, test my skills, and represent those who support me. But I believe this is God’s will. Sometimes what we want isn’t what’s best for us, and I trust there’s a bigger plan in motion. I’ll be back. Stronger, smarter, and more ready than ever. Thank you for all the love and support—it means everything to me.”

Clarke has been one of the fastest rising stars in Irish MMA and was seen as a major contender in the PFL tournament. Fans and fellow fighters have expressed their support, wishing him a full recovery as he begins his rehabilitation journey.

With his determination and work ethic, there is little doubt that Clarke will return to the cage stronger than ever, ready to continue his undefeated streak on the world stage.
