By ArdeePost Reporter
County Louth is celebrating a major sporting achievement as two of its own, Stuart Grehan and Gavin Tiernan, have been selected for the Great Britain & Ireland team for the 50th Walker Cup. The prestigious amateur golf event takes place at Cypress Point on California’s Monterey Peninsula on 6-7 September.
Both Grehan and Tiernan have enjoyed standout seasons. Grehan recently added the Irish Men’s Amateur Close Championship at Westport to his earlier Irish Men’s Amateur Open Championship win at Seapoint, cementing his status as one of Ireland’s top amateur golfers. Tiernan also impressed this year, reaching the final of the 130th R&A Amateur Championship at Royal St George’s before narrowly losing to American Ethan Fang, who will compete for the USA.
Speaking about the selection, Grehan said, “It’s an incredible honour to represent Ireland and Louth on such a big stage. We’ll give everything to make the county proud.” Tiernan added, “Being part of this team with such talented players is a dream come true. I’m thrilled to share this experience with Stuart and the rest of the squad.”
Joining the Louth pair in the 10-man squad is Luke Poulter, son of Ryder Cup legend Ian Poulter, and Scottish star Niall Shiels Donegan, who reached the semi-finals of the US Amateur. Dundalk’s Caolan Rafferty has been named first reserve. The full team is:
- Cameron Adam (Scotland, Royal Burgess, 22)
- Eliot Baker (England, Tiverton, 22)
- Dominic Clemons (England, Gog Magog, 23)
- Charlie Forster (England, Basingstoke, 22)
- Connor Graham (Scotland, Blairgowrie, 18)
- Stuart Grehan (Ireland, County Louth, 32)
- Luke Poulter (England, Woburn, 21)
- Niall Shiels Donegan (Scotland, Meadow Club, 20)
- Gavin Tiernan (Ireland, County Louth, 19)
- Tyler Weaver (England, Bury St Edmunds, 20)
- Reserve: Caolan Rafferty (Ireland, Dundalk, 32)
Captain Dean Robertson will lead the team as they take on a strong US side in what promises to be a thrilling contest. For County Louth, having two players on this elite stage is a proud moment, showcasing the county’s rising prominence in international amateur golf.
