Dundalk Dog Rescue’s Paddy Monahan Honoured with Louth Volunteer Leader Award

Long-time volunteer recognised for 15 years of dedication and compassion.

Dundalk Dog Rescue (DDR) is celebrating a proud moment this week as one of its most dedicated volunteers, Kennel Manager Paddy Monahan, received the Louth Volunteer Leader Award at a special ceremony hosted by the Louth Volunteer Centre in Bellingham Castle.

Paddy was nominated for the prestigious award by the Board of Directors at Dundalk Dog Rescue in recognition of his exceptional leadership and unwavering dedication to the charity over the past 15 years. Competing against more than 40 outstanding nominees from across the county, Paddy’s win drew warm applause and heartfelt congratulations from fellow volunteers, supporters, and animal lovers across Louth.

A Lifelong Commitment to Dundalk Dog Rescue

Having volunteered for most of Dundalk Dog Rescue’s 20-year history, Paddy has been central to the organisation’s journey—from humble beginnings as a small network of animal lovers to a thriving volunteer-led charity with more than 100 active members.

Since becoming Kennel Manager at the charity’s Dromiskin Centre in 2022, Paddy has led by example—ensuring that both volunteers and dogs receive the care, attention, and respect they deserve. His compassionate leadership and hands-on approach have earned him widespread admiration within the DDR family.

Leading with Heart and Humour

Paddy’s influence reaches far beyond the kennels. He manages volunteer schedules, trains new recruits, and plays a vital role in fundraising and community outreach across the region.

Known for his warmth, humour, and creativity, Paddy has also introduced several fun initiatives that bring people together, including the DDR Running Team, the “DDR Oscars”, and volunteer appreciation events. These activities help strengthen the sense of community that defines Dundalk Dog Rescue and keeps volunteers engaged year after year.

“This Award Belongs to the Whole Team”

Speaking after receiving the Louth Volunteer Leader Award, Paddy shared his gratitude and humility:

“I’m truly honoured to receive this award, but it really belongs to the whole Dundalk Dog Rescue team. Every volunteer gives their time, energy, and heart to make a difference for the dogs in our care. I’m just lucky to work alongside such amazing people who share the same passion and commitment. This award is for all of them.”

A Fitting Tribute in Dundalk Dog Rescue 20th Year

Edel Halpin, Director of Dundalk Dog Rescue, said the award couldn’t have come at a better time:

“This recognition is particularly special as we celebrate our 20th anniversary this year. Having Paddy acknowledged for his leadership and kindness feels like the perfect tribute to the spirit of volunteerism that has carried DDR through two decades of rescue work.”

As Dundalk Dog Rescue continues its mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome dogs across Louth and beyond, Paddy’s recognition shines a light on the importance of volunteers—the heart and soul of every animal charity.
