Paris, September 2, 2024 — Day 5 of the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris promises to be an exciting one for the Irish contingent, as they gear up for a series of crucial events across multiple disciplines. After a thrilling start to the Games, Irish athletes are ready to continue their quest for medals, with eyes particularly focused on today’s triathlon and para athletics events.

Triathlon Rescheduled After Postponement

Following yesterday’s unexpected postponement due to inclement weather, the highly anticipated triathlon events are set to take place this morning. Ireland’s dynamic duo, Chloe and Judith MacCombe, will be among the first to take to the course. Competing in the Women’s PTVI category (11:05 am), the MacCombe sisters, who have been a formidable force in para-triathlon, are expected to put in a strong performance. The pair, competing as visually impaired athletes, will navigate the challenging course with their guides, hoping to make a significant impact and secure a podium finish.

Also taking part in the triathlon is Cassie Cava, who will compete in the Women’s PTS4 category at 11:40 am. Cava, a relative newcomer to the international para-triathlon scene, has shown impressive form in the lead-up to the Games. The Irish supporters are hopeful that she can deliver a breakthrough performance on the world stage.

Shauna Bocquet in Women’s 1500m T54

At 10:35 am, all eyes will be on Shauna Bocquet as she takes to the track for the first round of the Women’s 1500m T54. Competing in Heat 2, Bocquet, who has consistently ranked among the top wheelchair racers globally, is expected to face stiff competition. However, her recent performances indicate she is in top form, and her supporters are optimistic about her chances of advancing to the finals.

Colin Judge in Men’s Singles Table Tennis

Later in the day, at 12:45 pm, Colin Judge will take on China’s Penfeng Feng in the round of 16 of the Men’s Singles MS3 table tennis event. Judge, who has been Ireland’s standout performer in para-table tennis, faces a tough challenge against the seasoned Chinese player. Nevertheless, Judge’s tenacity and skill have seen him triumph in difficult matches before, and he will be looking to upset the odds and move one step closer to a medal.

A Day of Potential Glory

Today represents a significant opportunity for Irish athletes to make their mark at the Paralympics. With strong contenders across multiple events, Day 5 could see some pivotal moments for Team Ireland as they strive to add to their medal tally. Irish fans, both in Paris and back home, will undoubtedly be following the action closely, cheering on their athletes with pride and hope.
