Fresh details have emerged in the ongoing investigation into the disappearance and suspected murder of schoolboy Kyran Durnin, with Gardaí now concentrating on text messages exchanged between a man and woman previously arrested in connection with the case.
According to today’s Sunday Independent, technical experts are forensically examining messages sent around the time Kyran was last seen, with investigators believing the communications could prove crucial in piecing together the child’s final known movements.
Kyran, who would have turned nine this year, was reported missing in August 2023, though Gardaí believe he may have died more than a year earlier, in May 2022, when he was just six years old and attending a primary school in Dundalk. His disappearance led to a murder inquiry being formally launched in October 2023.
During the investigation, Gardaí carried out extensive searches at three properties, including excavation works, seizing a significant volume of electronic devices. A source confirmed that “thousands of hours” of digital evidence, including mobile phone data, online communications, and CCTV, have been secured for analysis.
Detectives believe that text messages exchanged between the two suspects in the period surrounding Kyran’s disappearance may shed new light on what happened to him.
So far, over 570 investigative actions have been taken, with two individuals—a man and a woman—arrested on suspicion of murder. Both were later released without charge, but remain persons of significant interest. Gardaí also continue to liaise with Tusla as part of the inquiry.
A Garda spokesperson said:
“Despite substantial progress, we are still appealing for any member of the public with information—no matter how small—to come forward. The investigation remains active and dedicated to uncovering the full truth about what happened to Kyran.”
Members of the public can contact the dedicated incident room at Drogheda Garda Station on 041 987 4200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or speak to any Garda station nationwide.
The investigation remains one of the most sensitive and closely monitored child disappearance cases in the country, with Gardaí determined to provide answers for Kyran’s family and community.
