Louth Cruise Past Cavan to Boost Promotion Push

Louth GAA delivered a statement performance at Kingspan Breffni Park this evening, dismantling Cavan 1-22 to 1-12 to firmly place themselves in the promotion picture in the National Football League.

Coming into the clash on the back of a hard-fought win over Tyrone in Ardee, Gavin Devlin’s Leinster champions showed confidence, composure and cutting edge to take full control early and never look back.

Electric Start in Breffni

The game began at a lively tempo, with both sides trading early scores. Cavan struck first through Cian Shackleton, but Louth immediately signalled their attacking intent.

Ryan Burns nearly found the net with a powerful effort that was tipped over, and Sam Mulroy soon levelled matters from a free. Within minutes, Louth had seized the initiative.

Tadhg McDonnell split the posts from distance for the game’s first two-pointer, and Mulroy followed with another superb two-point free as momentum swung decisively in the visitors’ favour.

By the midway point of the half, Louth were in full flow.

Downey Goal Breaks the Game Open

The defining moment arrived just before the half-hour mark.

A brilliant flowing move saw Mulroy pick out Ryan Burns, who slipped a clever pass into the path of Ciarán Downey. The forward finished emphatically, striking first-time soccer-style into the net.

Louth immediately compounded Cavan’s misery with another Mulroy two-pointer, stretching the gap into double figures.

Paul Matthews added yet another two-pointer as Louth exploited the wind advantage to devastating effect.

At half-time, Louth led 1-16 to 0-06 — a commanding 13-point advantage built on clinical shooting and relentless pressure.

Controlled Second-Half Display

If there was any expectation of a Cavan comeback, Louth quickly extinguished it.

Mulroy turned provider early in the second half, releasing McDonnell for a well-taken point before Burns and Downey added further scores to push the lead out to 16 points.

Conor Grimes surged forward to contribute, while Kieran McArdle extended the margin further as Cavan struggled to cope with Louth’s pace and movement.

Although Ciarán Brady netted for Cavan to give the home supporters something to cheer, and late scores from Paddy Lynch and Gearóid McKiernan trimmed the deficit, the result was never in doubt.

Louth remained composed and disciplined, closing out the game with authority.

Promotion Race Intensifies

The final whistle confirmed a comprehensive 1-22 to 1-12 victory.

For Cavan, despite last weekend’s morale-boosting win over Kildare, this defeat leaves them firmly embroiled in a relegation battle.

For Louth, however, the outlook is far brighter.

This dominant display — built on sharp shooting, smart game management and a clinical forward line — strengthens their push for promotion and reinforces their credentials as genuine contenders in the division.

With momentum building and confidence high, Louth’s campaign continues to gather pace at just the right time.
