Christmas Giving Tree – Bringing Festive Joy to Nursing Home Residents Across Louth

The Louth Volunteer Centre has launched a heartfelt new initiative, the Christmas Giving Tree, inviting people across the county to help brighten the festive season for residents in local nursing homes. The programme builds on the long-running success of the organisation’s Cards of Care campaign and aims to ensure that every participating resident receives a personalised Christmas gift this December.

More than 100 nursing home residents across County Louth are already on this year’s Christmas list. The Volunteer Centre is encouraging individuals, families, community groups, schools, businesses, and workplaces to get involved and help spread joy to some of the county’s most isolated older people.

A Season That Can Feel Lonely

Although Christmas is often portrayed as a time of celebration, it can be a difficult period for many older adults living in long-term care. Feelings of loneliness and disconnection are common, especially for residents who may not receive visitors.

Here in Louth, the Christmas Giving Tree offers a meaningful way to remind these residents that they remain valued and remembered.

“The Christmas Giving Tree is a simple but powerful way for our community to show care and connection during the festive season,” said Olivia Conlon, Engagement and Operations Lead at Louth Volunteer Centre. “By choosing a resident’s name and gifting something thoughtful, volunteers help bring a moment of joy to those who may otherwise feel isolated at this time of year.”

How the Christmas Giving Tree Works

Beginning Tuesday, 18th November, Christmas trees decorated with special tags will be displayed in both Volunteer Centre offices in Dundalk and Drogheda.

Each tag carries the name of a resident from one of the participating nursing homes:

  • Cúram Care Home, Dundalk
  • Áras Mhuire Nursing Facility
  • St. Oliver Plunkett Community Unit

Volunteers simply select a name, purchase a small, thoughtful gift, and return it to the Volunteer Centre. Gifts will then be paired with a handwritten Card of Care and delivered to each resident during the week before Christmas.

For those unable to visit in person, names can be provided remotely by contacting the Volunteer Centre directly.

Residents look forward to these gifts each year, and even the smallest gesture can make a tremendous impact.
