Old Mellifont Abbey and Battle of the Boyne Among Over 70 Sites Offering Free Admission for National Heritage Week 2025

The Office of Public Works (OPW) has announced that Old Mellifont Abbey, alongside the Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre, will be among more than 70 heritage sites across Ireland offering free admission on Saturday, 16 August 2025 to mark the opening of National Heritage Week.

The initiative, now in its 20th year, is part of a broader celebration of Ireland’s rich cultural and historical heritage. This year’s theme, “Exploring Our Foundations,” encourages people to reconnect with the origins of Irish identity, both in its built environment and in the landscapes, crafts, and stories that have shaped generations.

Speaking at the launch event at Portumna Castle in County Galway, Minister of State for the Office of Public Works, Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran, highlighted the importance of making heritage accessible to all.

“We are delighted to offer free admission on the opening day of Heritage Week. With over 70 heritage sites on offer, there is something for everyone to explore and enjoy.”

Among the featured events is an interactive art activity at Old Mellifont Abbey in County Louth, where visitors are invited to paint replicas of medieval floor tiles, connecting art with archaeology in a hands-on experience. The Abbey, a former 12th-century Cistercian monastery, provides a stunning backdrop for exploring monastic life, medieval craftsmanship, and local history.

Nearby, at the Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre, history will come to life through living history re-enactments, including a thrilling portrayal of 17th-century military drills by Laoch Living History. Visitors will experience what it was like to be a soldier in the aftermath of one of Ireland’s most defining battles.

Martina Moloney, Chair of the Heritage Council, praised the OPW’s continued support:

“The OPW cares for some of the most magnificent places in Ireland. By opening the gates for free on August 16, more people will have the chance to engage with these stories and places that shape who we are.”

Highlights of the week include:

  • Family Fun Day at Glendalough featuring a guided tour and LEGO workshop
  • A special themed tour at Ross Castle in Kerry
  • Charcoal drawing and traditional music at Sligo Abbey
  • A Dinosaur Tree Tour at JFK Arboretum in Wexford

With a variety of talks, workshops, and activities planned nationwide, Heritage Week offers a chance for families, history enthusiasts, and curious minds of all ages to experience Ireland’s heritage in new and exciting ways.
