Road Safety Campaign Urges Public to Call Out Bad Driving as Hundreds Detected Speeding
Road Safety Campaign Urges Public to Call Out Bad Driving
This bank holiday weekend, road safety takes center stage as people are encouraged to actively call out poor driving behavior as part of a major Garda campaign. The initiative, which began on Thursday, has already led to the detection of hundreds of speeding motorists, while also targeting those driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The campaign has seen an increased presence of Garda checkpoints and patrols. Last night, a significant incident unfolded on the Dundalk/Greenore Road, highlighting the critical nature of the ongoing safety efforts. Members of the Dundalk Roads Policing Unit observed a particularly reckless driver who overtook two vehicles on a solid white line in Bellurgan, traveling at 40kph over the speed limit.
The dangerous maneuver was made even more alarming with three passengers in the car, ended in the driver testing positive for cocaine at a roadside test. The individual was subsequently taken to Dundalk Garda Station for a blood sample to determine the extent of drug use.
Leo Lieghio, Vice President of the Road Victims Association, is calling for a cultural shift in how we address bad driving. “We need to start having difficult conversations about road safety and driver responsibility,” Lieghio said. “It’s not just about observing the rules ourselves but also about holding each other accountable. If we see dangerous behavior, we should speak up or report it. This is about saving lives and preventing tragedies.”
As the campaign continues throughout the holiday period, both drivers and pedestrians are urged to be vigilant and proactive. The Gardaí remain committed to enforcing road safety laws and are calling on the community to support these efforts by reporting unsafe driving and fostering a culture of accountability on the roads.
