Man accused of murdering parents and brother remanded in custody pending psychiatric assessment

A man accused of murdering his parents and brother in County Louth has been further remanded in custody as preparations continue for an independent psychiatric assessment.

Robert O’Connor (31), of Drumgowna, Louth, appeared by videolink from Cloverhill Prison before Drogheda District Court on Monday morning.

He is charged with the murder of his mother Louise Doherty O’Connor, father Mark O’Connor, and brother Evan O’Connor at the family home in Drumgowna on Monday, September 29th.

The bodies of the three victims were discovered by a care worker who visited the property that afternoon, prompting a major Garda investigation and widespread community shock.

During the special sitting of the court last Tuesday, Gardaí told the court that the accused made no reply when arrested and charged, and that the Director of Public Prosecutions had directed that Mr O’Connor face three counts of murder.

At that hearing, defence solicitor Paul J. Moore applied for a psychiatric assessment of his client while in custody and requested free legal aid for both a solicitor and one counsel. The requests were granted by Judge Stephanie Coggans, who remanded Mr O’Connor in custody.

Appearing again today, Mr O’Connor remained calm and spoke only to confirm his identity during the brief hearing. His solicitor, Mr Moore, informed Judge Nicola Andrews that his client was scheduled to undergo an independent psychiatric assessment on Wednesday.

He also sought additional legal aid to cover the costs of the assessment and the appointment of a senior counsel to the defence team. Judge Andrews granted both requests and remanded the accused in custody pending further proceedings.

The case has now been adjourned to October 20th to allow time for the preparation of the book of evidence.

No application for bail was made, as murder charges must be dealt with by the High Court.

The triple killing has sent shockwaves through the quiet rural community of Louth, where neighbours have expressed ongoing grief and disbelief over the tragedy that unfolded in Drumgowna.
