Ardee News and Sport Sinn Féin TD Joanna Byrne Urges Emergency Funding for SOSAD

Louth Sinn Féin TD Joanna Byrne has made an urgent appeal to the Minister for Mental Health and the HSE, calling for immediate emergency funding to support the vital work of the local suicide prevention service, SOSAD.

Deputy Byrne highlighted the essential role that SOSAD plays in the community, providing life-saving mental health services to individuals and families across County Louth. Speaking in the Dáil, she stressed the importance of ensuring the organisation has the necessary resources to continue its operations.

“SOSAD has been a lifeline for countless people in our community,” said Deputy Byrne. “They offer crucial support to those experiencing mental health difficulties, and their services are needed now more than ever. We cannot afford to let this service falter due to a lack of funding.”

The call for emergency funding comes amid growing concerns about the rising demand for mental health support in the region. SOSAD has reported an increase in the number of people seeking assistance, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Deputy Byrne emphasised that while the staff and volunteers at SOSAD work tirelessly to provide support, they are operating under significant financial strain. “We owe it to those struggling with their mental health to ensure that SOSAD has the resources it needs to continue its invaluable work,” she added.

The Sinn Féin representative also called on the wider community to support SOSAD’s fundraising efforts. “This is about saving lives,” she said. “Mental health services must be adequately funded and prioritised.”

In response to Deputy Byrne’s appeal, a spokesperson for the Minister for Mental Health acknowledged the critical work being done by SOSAD and confirmed that discussions are ongoing regarding potential funding allocations.

SOSAD has been a cornerstone of mental health support in Louth for over a decade, providing counselling services, crisis support, and community outreach programs. The organisation relies heavily on public donations and voluntary support, making state funding crucial to its continued operation.
