Ardee News and SportSnow, Ice, and Strong Winds: Wintry Weather to Impact Parts of Ireland Ahead of Christmas

As Christmas approaches, Ireland is bracing for a mix of wintry weather, with snow, ice, and strong winds expected to affect several counties over the coming days. Met Éireann has issued a series of weather warnings, signaling challenging conditions for many as they prepare for the holiday season.

Snow and Ice Warning for Five Counties

A Status Yellow snow and ice warning has been issued for Louth, Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, and Leitrim. This warning will come into effect at 10 p.m. on Saturday and remain in place until 9 a.m. on Sunday.

Hail, sleet, and snow are forecast during this period, bringing the potential for icy stretches and hazardous travel conditions. Poor visibility is expected, making it a challenging start to Sunday morning for those in the affected areas.

Strong Winds Across Eight Counties

A separate Status Yellow wind warning is also in place for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, and Sligo until 2 p.m. on Sunday. Counties Clare, Kerry, and Limerick will see the same warning come into effect at 3 p.m. today, lasting for 24 hours.

Met Éireann warns of wave overtopping and spray along coastal areas, which could lead to travel disruptions and potential damage from fallen trees. The winds will reach gale force on western and northern coasts before easing towards evening on Sunday.

Weather Outlook for the Weekend and Beyond

Saturday Night: Conditions will deteriorate with strong winds and the onset of snow and ice in some areas.

Sunday Morning: Blustery showers of rain, hail, sleet, and possibly snow will continue, gradually becoming confined to the west and north by the afternoon. Daytime temperatures will range from 5 to 8 degrees.

Sunday Night: Showers will ease, leaving clear spells, with temperatures dropping to 2 to 5 degrees.

Monday: Light rain or drizzle will spread eastward, bringing milder conditions with temperatures climbing to 10 to 13 degrees.

Christmas Week: Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and St. Stephen’s Day are expected to be mostly cloudy but largely dry, with daytime temperatures of 11 to 12 degrees. Nights will see little temperature variation, remaining mild.

Travel Advisory

Met Éireann is urging motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution, particularly in counties under the snow, ice, and wind warnings. Difficult travel conditions, reduced visibility, and icy patches are likely to cause disruptions, particularly on untreated roads.

As the country transitions from wintry showers to milder weather heading into Christmas, those planning travel or festive activities are advised to stay updated on the latest forecasts.
