Ardee News and Sport – That Sound Podcast Celebrates First Anniversary with Legendary Guest
On Tuesday, March 25th, That Sound Podcast will celebrate its first anniversary, marking a successful year of bringing music conversations to listeners. To commemorate the occasion, hosts Gavin Malone and Luke Cassidy have lined up a special episode featuring legendary bassist Gerry McAvoy. McAvoy, who played alongside Rory Gallagher for two decades, has toured the world multiple times and shared the stage with iconic acts such as Fleetwood Mac, The Doors, and Black Sabbath. This exclusive conversation promises to be a must-listen for rock enthusiasts.
The origins of That Sound Podcast stem from a casual conversation between Ardee native Gavin Malone and his friend Luke Cassidy at the gym. Malone, recognizing Cassidy’s experience with recording drum videos for YouTube, asked if he had enough equipment to start a podcast. The idea quickly took off, and what began as a platform to promote Irish talent has since evolved into an international music podcast, featuring multi-million-selling artists as well as up-and-coming local musicians.
Cassidy, a drummer for The Savage Hearts, has played in renowned venues such as Whelan’s and even in Camden, London. The band, led by Evan Walsh—formerly of The Strypes—is on the verge of making it big. The Strypes, a band from Cavan, gained widespread recognition years ago, recording albums in the same studios as The Beatles and supporting major acts like Arctic Monkeys. In a humorous twist, Malone recalled how a conversation on the podcast led to Cassidy becoming the drummer for The Savage Hearts.
One of the podcast’s standout guests has been Today FM DJ and thrash metal enthusiast Dave Moore. Born in 1975 in Portmarnock, Dublin, Moore started his career as a songwriter and music producer before moving into radio, co-hosting with Dermot Whelan on 98FM in 2002. In 2014, he joined Today FM, and he now co-hosts the podcast Why Would You Tell Me That?! alongside Neil Delamere, exploring unusual and intriguing topics. While Moore is known for his love of thrash metal, many find it amusing that he is also a huge boy band fan. He fondly recalled, “The best gig I’ve ever been to was in 2002 in California. My wife and I were living in LA at the time, and she bought tickets for NSYNC in Anaheim for my 27th birthday. It was the best night of my life. NSYNC are phenomenal. I love their songs.”
Reflecting on the future of That Sound Podcast, Malone remains realistic about the challenges ahead. “Who knows? It’s a tough gig as there are so many podcasts, but we try to do something with the music angle,” he told The Ardee Post. “When we started, we did some research and found that there weren’t many music podcasts focusing on the hard rock, classic rock, and blues genres that we love. But we’ve covered everything from pop to heavy metal.”
From its beginnings as a platform for Irish musicians to its growth into a respected international music podcast, That Sound Podcast continues to bring engaging conversations to listeners. We at The Ardee Post congratulate Gavin, Luke, and the entire team on their first anniversary and wish them continued success in bringing great content to music fans of all ages. Be sure to tune in on March 25th for their special episode with Gerry McAvoy—because That Sound Podcastis only getting louder!
