Legendary Dundalk Manager Jim McLaughlin
The footballing world is mourning the loss of one of the most celebrated figures in League of Ireland history, Jim McLaughlin, who has passed away at the age of 83. McLaughlin, a former Northern Ireland international, leaves behind a legacy that few can match, having secured an extraordinary eight League of Ireland Premier Division titles and six FAI Cups throughout his managerial career.

Born in Derry, McLaughlin’s journey in Irish football is nothing short of legendary. He joined Dundalk in 1974 as a player-manager and quickly transformed the club, overseeing one of its most successful eras. Under his leadership, Dundalk won three League of Ireland Premier Division titles and three FAI Cups, and made a historic run to the last 16 of the European Cup in 1980—a feat that remains a proud chapter in the club’s history.

After departing Dundalk in 1983, McLaughlin continued to build on his remarkable career. He took over at Shamrock Rovers, where he guided the team to three consecutive league titles from 1984 to 1986 and lifted the FAI Cup twice. His success didn’t stop there. McLaughlin went on to manage Derry City, where he secured a league and cup double in 1989, further solidifying his status as a managerial great. He later co-managed Shelbourne to a league title in 1992, before having a stint with Drogheda and eventually returning to Dundalk.

Dundalk FC has paid tribute to McLaughlin, hailing him as the “greatest” in a heartfelt statement that reflects the deep impact he had on the club and its supporters.

Derry City FC also expressed their sorrow, stating, “All at Derry City Football Club are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jim McLaughlin. All connected to Derry City would like to pass on our condolences to his wife Reina; his children Sean, Paul, Martin, and Jane, as well as his many grandchildren.”

League of Ireland Director, Mark Scanlon, added his voice to the tributes, saying, “We are all deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jim McLaughlin. Jim is a true League of Ireland legend who achieved unprecedented success in our game. As well as his incredible career in Irish football, Jim was a remarkable person who will be greatly missed by everyone in Irish football. I would like to extend our sympathies on behalf of the League of Ireland and the FAI to Jim’s family and friends at this difficult time.”

McLaughlin’s passing marks the end of an era for Irish football, but his legacy will undoubtedly live on in the hearts and minds of those who had the privilege to witness his genius.
