Two Men Arrested After Fire at IPAS Centre in Drogheda

Emergency services were called to the scene on Georges Street, Drogheda, at approximately 8:15 pm, after reports of a fire at the property. Gardaí were alerted by members of the Louth Fire Service, who had responded swiftly to control the blaze.

Initial reports suggested that the fire may have been caused by fireworks, but following a detailed investigation, An Garda Síochána has confirmed that the fire was started deliberately.

All occupants of the building were safely evacuated. Several individuals received medical assessments at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, for minor injuries and smoke inhalation.

On Wednesday night, Gardaí arrested a man in his 20s in Co. Louth under the Criminal Damage Act 1991. He is currently being detained at a Garda station in Louth. A second man, also in his 20s, was arrested on Thursday morning for similar offences and is being held at another Garda station in the county.

Gardaí have confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and forensic examinations of the scene are being conducted as part of the inquiry. Officers are appealing to anyone who may have been in the Georges Street area between 7:30 pm and 8:30 pm on the evening of October 31st, or who may have dashcam or CCTV footage, to contact Drogheda Garda Station.

The fire has raised local concerns about the safety of IPAS accommodation centres and the protection of residents seeking asylum in Ireland. Authorities have reiterated that any acts of intimidation or violence will be treated as serious criminal offences.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Drogheda Garda Station on 041 987 4200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
