Drogheda United fall to Sligo as hosts claim first win

By ArdeePost Reporter

Sligo Rovers secured their first victory of the League of Ireland Premier Division season with a hard-fought 2–1 win over Drogheda United at the Showgrounds on Saturday night.

Despite a spirited second-half push from Drogheda, the home side held firm to claim all three points in a match that saw John Russell’s men finally get their season up and running after a difficult opening run of fixtures.

Strange atmosphere at the Showgrounds

There was an unusual atmosphere in Sligo as Drogheda United travelled west without their supporters. The absence of away fans followed a four-match ban imposed on Drogheda supporters after damage was caused to facilities at Oriel Park during their clash with Dundalk last month.

While the stands lacked the usual travelling support, the match itself was lively from the outset, with Sligo showing a clear sense of urgency as they chased their first win of the campaign.

Sligo start strongly

The hosts began brightly and immediately put the Drogheda defence under pressure. Alex Nolan, Ryan O’Kane and Daire Patton all threatened early on, with Patton coming closest when he rattled the crossbar from close range just three minutes into the game.

Sligo continued to dominate possession and territory throughout the first half, while Drogheda goalkeeper Luke Dennison was kept busy dealing with repeated attacking moves.

At the other end, Sligo keeper Sam Sargeant was largely untroubled, as Drogheda struggled to create meaningful chances during the opening period.

Fitzgerald breaks the deadlock

Sligo’s pressure finally paid off deep into first-half stoppage time.

Ryan O’Kane delivered a dangerous corner which was partially cleared by the Drogheda defence. The ball broke kindly for Will Fitzgerald, who reacted quickest inside the box to fire home and give the home side a deserved lead heading into the break.

Nolan doubles the advantage

Sligo strengthened their grip on the match 13 minutes into the second half when Alex Nolan scored his first goal for the club.

The midfielder’s initial free-kick from the edge of the box was blocked by the Drogheda wall, but the rebound fell perfectly back into his path. Nolan made no mistake the second time around, drilling a precise shot into the far corner beyond Dennison to make it 2–0.

Drogheda fight back

To their credit, Drogheda United responded quickly and gave themselves a lifeline just three minutes later.

Ciaron Harkin was penalised for handling the ball inside the box, and Mark Doyle stepped up to take the resulting penalty. Doyle calmly sent Sargeant the wrong way to reduce the deficit and bring Drogheda back into contention.

The goal sparked renewed energy from Kevin Doherty’s side as they pushed forward in search of an equaliser.

Drogheda apply late pressure but no equaliser

Drogheda threw everything at Sligo during the closing stages, committing players forward and testing the home defence with a series of late attacks.

However, Sligo held firm under the pressure to secure their first three points of the season.

The visitors were left frustrated at the final whistle when referee Oliver Moran ended the game just as Drogheda were preparing to take a corner, denying them one final opportunity to salvage a point.

Important result for both sides

For Sligo Rovers, the victory will provide a welcome boost after a difficult start to the season and will ease some of the pressure on manager John Russell.

For Drogheda United, the defeat means they return from the Showgrounds empty-handed despite a determined second-half effort.

They will now look to regroup quickly as they prepare for their next league outing.
