Murphy Goal Helps 14-Man Louth Overcome Fermanagh in Opener
Fermanagh 0-15
In a contest defined by difficult conditions in Dundalk, Conor Murphy provided the decisive moment in the 55th minute. His clinical finish from close range proved to be the only goal of the game, handing the Wee County the momentum they needed to see out a hard-earned victory.
Bright Start and Discipline Tests
The home side dictated the early tempo, racing into a 0-6 to 0-2 lead within the first eleven minutes. Sean Flynn was instrumental during this period, slotting two excellent points from center-half. Fermanagh relied heavily on the accuracy of Dannan McKeogh, who kept the visitors in touch through a series of converted frees.
However, Louth’s task was made significantly harder just before the interval. Center-half back Michael O’Shea was dismissed for a second yellow card, leaving the Reds to navigate the entire second half with a numerical disadvantage. By the break, Louth held a slender 0-8 to 0-7 lead.
Murphy Finds the Breakthrough
Fermanagh leveled immediately after the restart through Tom Keenan, but Louth responded like leaders. Ciaran McKelvey and the unerring Darren Geoghegan restored the lead, with midfielder Mark Gahan also finding the range to push Louth three points clear by the 45th minute.
The Erne men narrowed the gap to a single point as the game entered the final quarter, but Louth struck the hammer blow ten minutes from time. Murphy’s goal gave the hosts a 1-14 to 0-12 cushion, a gap that Fermanagh could not close.
Eyes on Sligo
Geoghegan finished the day with a vital eight-point haul, ensuring Louth maintained their lead through a flurry of late frees. The victory provides the perfect springboard for the squad as they prepare for a difficult away trip to Sligo next weekend.
