Tolka Park Turnover: Drogheda United Stun Shels in Dramatic 4-3 Victory
Drogheda United produced one of the most spirited second-half performances of the season to come from two goals down and defeat Shelbourne in a breathless seven-goal encounter at Tolka Park.
A barrage of boos rang around the Dublin venue at the final whistle as Damien Duff’s side fell to their fourth consecutive defeat. For the Drogs, it was a night of pure grit and clinical finishing, capped off by a sensational long-range winner from Jack Keeley.
A Difficult Start for the Visitors
The game exploded into life early on, with Shels having a goal ruled out for offside before Sean Boyd broke the deadlock 20 minutes in. Boyd capitalized on a perfectly timed through ball from Harry Wood to fire low past Flynn Talley.
Drogheda’s night looked to be going from bad to worse when Jago Godden narrowly escaped a second yellow card for a heavy challenge on Lunney. Kevin Doherty acted quickly, substituted the New Zealander for former Reds man Shane Farrell, but Shels doubled their lead shortly after when captain Paddy Barrett headed home from a corner.
The Comeback Begins
The turning point came just before the interval. Edwin Agbaje gave the traveling Louth support hope when he powered home a header from a Kavanagh corner, punishing Shels’ ongoing struggles with defensive set-pieces.
Sensing blood in the second half, Warren Davis took over. The 21-year-old attacking midfielder scored two goals in five minutes to completely flip the game on its head. His first came after Thomas Oluwa carved open the Shels defense, and his second was a tidy finish at the end of a Conor Kane cross.
Keeley’s Redemption
The drama wasn’t finished. Shelbourne clawed back to 3-3 when Harry Wood converted from the penalty spot after Rodrigo Freitas was fouled in the area by Jack Keeley.
However, Jack Keeley made amends in spectacular fashion. With the clock ticking down and the spoils looking likely to be shared, the defender unleashed a low 25-yard strike that arrowed into the bottom corner, sparking wild celebrations in the away end.

The 2026 Irish road racing season has roared into life as Michael Dunlop secured pole position for the headline Superbike race at a sun-drenched Cookstown 100.
Qualifying on the 2.1-mile Orritor circuit took place under perfect conditions this afternoon. Dunlop, who arrived at the event with high expectations, utilized his BMW machinery to perfection, setting a blistering pace that his rivals struggled to match. The Ballymoney man’s performance signals he is in peak form as the national season officially commences.
The Front Row Battle
While Dunlop took the headlines, the battle for the remaining front-row spots was intense. Magherafelt man Paul Jordan delivered a superb performance to secure second on the grid, proving he will be a major threat in Saturday’s main events.
Rounding out the front row is the experienced Michael Sweeney. The Skerries rider, always a force to be reckoned with on the national circuits, looked comfortable and fast throughout the session, setting up a mouth-watering three-way battle for the opening race of the year.
Practice Day Highlights
The “sun-kissed” Orritor circuit provided some of the best practice conditions seen at the event in years. Beyond the Superbike class, action was fast and furious across all categories:
- Supersport: Qualifying for the 600cc class saw equally tight margins, with the top five riders separated by less than a second.
- Newcomers: A fresh crop of road racers successfully completed their controlled laps, marking their official entry into the sport.
- Classic Machinery: The roar of vintage engines added to the atmosphere as the classics took to the roads for their timed sessions.

The Ballymoney “Maverick” will campaign the Italian machine in the Superbike and Senior classes at both the North West 200 and the 2026 Isle of Man TT. Currently tied with his uncle Joey Dunlop on 26 TT wins, a single victory this year would make Michael the most successful rider in the history of the Mountain Course.
Broadcasting News: NW200 Until 2029
In a major boost for fans unable to travel, BBC Sport NI has secured a new three-year broadcasting partnership with the North West 200. This ensures the event remains accessible globally via live streaming and television highlights through to its historic Centenary Year in 2029.
