Bohemians picked up a fifth win in their last six away matches on Friday night, putting pressure on league leaders Shamrock Rovers. For Drogheda United manager Kevin Doherty, the night was a stark reminder of his side’s current struggles; they remain winless in eight games and are now just two points above a resurgent Waterford at the foot of the table.

The Breakthrough

The opener arrived in somewhat fortuitous fashion after 15 minutes. Following a defended corner, the visitors recycled possession at the edge of the box. Markuss Strods played a ball to Jordan Flores, whose cross was inadvertently turned into his own net by Drogheda’s top scorer, Mark Doyle.

Doyle had an opportunity to redeem himself minutes later, heading Thomas Oluwa’s delivery just wide of the post, but Drogheda struggled to turn their possession into concrete threats as the game progressed.

Doubling the Lead

The insurance goal came from a familiar face for the home crowd. Substitute Douglas James-Taylor had been on the pitch for less than two minutes when he latched onto a reverse pass from Dayle Rooney. He managed to beat goalkeeper Luke Dennison to the ball, dinking a calm finish over the stopper.

James-Taylor could have added a third late on, but his spot-kick was sent flying over the stadium following a foul, sparing the hosts further punishment.
