Two-in-a-Row: Dominant Ardee Community School Girls Put on Masterclass to Retain Sonia Hoey Cup at Star-Studded Festival of Football
The incredible sporting dominance of our local schools has hit a spectacular new peak this term, as Ardee Community School successfully defended their county football crown in emphatic fashion.
Reigning supreme once more. An absolute credit to the town.
The secondary school stars at Ardee Community School are celebrating a sensational milestone, capturing the highly coveted Sonia Hoey Cup for the second consecutive year. The tournament, brilliantly hosted by the Health and Physical Activity team at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) in close partnership with Louth LGFA, returned to the campus with massive structural momentum following its successful debut last season.
The expanded tournament saw intense competition across the county.
Building beautifully on the single-day format launched in 2025, this year’s elite championship expanded to feature elite sports teams from eight separate secondary schools across County Louth. High-stakes group stage fixtures were tracked closely throughout March and April, before six standard-setting squads officially progressed to the grand knockout stages, held at DkIT as part of the vibrant Sonia Hoey Festival of Football.
🏆 The Knockout Bracket Breakdown
The tournament provided incredible drama on the Dundalk pitches, showcasing the absolute finest young footballing talent in the region:
- 🛡️ The Shield Final: This bracket was tightly contested by Ballymakenny College of Drogheda and tournament debutants St Louis Secondary School, Dundalk. St Louis put on an incredibly brave performance, doing their famous past-pupil Sonia Hoey immensely proud. Ultimately, a highly polished Ballymakenny side ran out eventual winners after an exciting display of end-to-end football.
- ⚔️ The Cup Semi-Finals: The stakes were massive as the reigning holders, Ardee Community School, lined up against St Vincent’s. In the parallel semi-final, Our Lady’s College, Greenhills (Drogheda) battled fiercely against last season’s Shield champions, the Marist.
- 🥇 The Grand Cup Showpiece: Following a series of fiercely contested matches, Ardee Community School and the Marist successfully punched their tickets to the grand final. True to form, the Ardee ladies proved an unstoppable force in the main event, outclassing the challengers to comfortably retain their title.
A Beautiful Tribute to a True Louth LGFA Legend
Silverware presented by those who knew her best.
The presentation of the cups carried massive emotional significance for the entire Louth sporting community. The family of the late, beloved Sonia Hoey—the legendary former Louth LGFA star and highly respected colleague at DkIT—were proudly on hand to present the silverware, offering a beautiful tribute to Sonia’s enduring legacy and her incredible impact on local sports.
An elite standard-setter was also in attendance to inspire the players.
Louth Senior Ladies captain Áine Breen took time out to watch the next generation of football stars tracking their goals on the pitch. Following the final whistle, the county captain officially stepped up to present the prestigious Player of the Tournament accolade to the exceptionally talented Lucy Rogers from the Marist, wrapping up an unforgettable celebration of women’s sports in Mid-Louth.
