Residents of Ardee are growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of respect some drivers are showing towards disabled individuals, parents with buggies, and young children who rely on clear footpaths to navigate the town safely. The situation reached a tipping point on Sunday afternoon when at least five cars were parked on the pavement across from the Topaz service station on Drogheda Road, completely blocking access for pedestrians.

This blatant disregard for public safety and accessibility is not only inconsiderate but also illegal. The Road Traffic (Traffic and Parking) Regulations 1997 Section 36 (2) (i) explicitly states that “A vehicle shall not be parked on a footway, a grass margin, or a median strip.” There are no loopholes or exceptions to this rule.

Since February 1st, 2022, the fine for parking on a footpath has been €80, following an increase from €40, a move rightly implemented by Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan. Despite this, enforcement of the law remains lax, with An Garda Síochána and local authorities seemingly turning a blind eye to the widespread issue.

Efforts are underway to improve both education and enforcement around the offence of parking on footpaths, but progress has been slow. For the safety and well-being of all pedestrians, especially those with disabilities or young children, it is crucial that this issue is taken seriously and addressed promptly.

Ardee’s footpaths should be safe and accessible for everyone. It’s time for drivers to respect the law and for authorities to ensure that violations are dealt with effectively. Let’s work together to keep our community’s footpaths clear and safe for all.
