Match Report: Dundalk FC 2-2 Derry City

Dundalk showed immense grit to come from behind twice on Friday night, earning a hard-fought point against Derry City in a match dominated by driving wind and heavy rain.

For the second time this season, these two sides could not be separated, playing out an identical 2-2 draw to the one seen at the Brandywell in February. Despite the difficult elements, Oriel Park witnessed a high-intensity encounter that kept the 2,736-strong crowd on the edge of their seats until the final whistle.

Teahan to the Rescue

Derry City took the lead twice in the first half against the run of play. James Clarke opened the scoring in the 14th minute, only for Tyreke Wilson to level with a stunning strike—his second goal in a week. Dipo Akinyemi restored the Candystripes’ advantage just before the break, leaving the hosts with a mountain to climb.

With the wind at their backs in the second period, Dundalk dominated possession. The pressure finally told in the 80th minute when substitute Ronan Teahan met a Tyreke Wilson cross to power a header home, sending the home support into raptures.

“Impact from the bench was immense. We were huffing and puffing for a long time, but there was a lot of good stuff.” – Manager Ciarán Kilduff.

Late Drama and Red Cards

The closing stages were marred by stop-start play as Derry looked to weather the Dundalk storm. The visitors were eventually reduced to ten men when James McClean received a late red card for two yellow cards, but despite Eoin Kenny rattling the post in the dying seconds, Tiernan Lynch’s side held on.

Reflecting on the result, Kilduff expressed some frustration regarding the consistency of officiating: “I don’t think Daryl [Horgan] should have been sent off for time wasting during the week, and tonight you’re seeing another example where the game is just slowed down, but you’re getting different outcomes.”

Drogheda Trip Postponed

While the action unfolded in Dundalk, Mid-Louth fans of Drogheda United were left disappointed as their away fixture against Waterford FC was called off just 45 minutes before kick-off.

A pitch inspection at the RSC deemed the surface unplayable following a heavy downpour. Ironically, the late call-off primarily affected the home supporters, as Drogheda fans were already serving the final game of a four-match travel ban. A re-fix date for the fixture is expected to be announced early next week.

Dundalk now sit 4th in the table as they continue their push for European qualification.
