Ardee News and Sport — “Hopes Rise for End to Ardee Traffic Tailbacks After Roof Collapse: Works Underway to Restore Flow”

Efforts to resolve the severe traffic delays in Ardee following the collapse of a building’s roof in the town center have picked up pace, with hopes that the disruption will soon come to an end. The incident occurred last weekend on Market Street, leading to the implementation of a temporary traffic management system that has caused significant tailbacks throughout the area.

Louth County Council’s Cathaoirleach, Kevin Callan, confirmed that the local authority had been in ongoing communication with the owner of the derelict property throughout the week. A Dangerous Structures Notice was promptly served, requiring the building’s owner to engage a Chartered Engineer to oversee work that would make the structure safe.

This followed the issuing of a Derelict Sites Notice on the owner of the property, as authorities were forced to take swift action due to the potential risk posed by the collapsed roof. Contractors have now begun working on removing the remaining roof debris, with the aim of restoring safety and reopening the road to two-way traffic.

“The contractors are expected to complete the removal of the roof by Sunday evening,” explained Cllr Callan. “We hope that by then, traffic can flow normally through Market Street again, alleviating the congestion that has plagued the town.”

Ardee’s Fine Gael Councillor Dolores Minogue provided an update earlier today, expressing optimism that the works are progressing well:

“I’m pleased to share that the work has commenced on the old SuperValu building on Main Street. This follows an issue I raised last Saturday, after a member of the public sent me photos and videos of the fallen debris. Fast forward to today, and I’m happy to report that securing the site is now underway. The priority is to make the first floor safe so workers can continue the job. Everything is expected to be completed by Sunday.”

Cllr Minogue reassured residents that despite the disruption caused by the temporary traffic measures, “Ardee Town is open for business,” urging people to continue supporting local shops and services as the work progresses.

The building at the heart of the issue, once a bustling hub as the former SuperValu premises, had fallen into a state of disrepair. The roof’s collapse sparked concerns among locals about safety and traffic, prompting the Council to take immediate action. The roof removal project is seen as a crucial step in restoring normality to the area and ensuring public safety.

With the situation now being addressed and the removal of the roof underway, hopes are high that Ardee’s traffic woes will return to normal. Authorities will continue to monitor the works closely, with further updates expected as progress is made towards the road’s reopening.
