Mellifont Abbey Set to Welcome Cistercian Community

Historic Mellifont Abbey in County Louth is set to become the new long-term home of a Cistercian monastic community relocating from Roscrea, Co Tipperary.

The decision was confirmed by the head of the Cistercian Order in Ireland following a formal vote by the community’s Conventual Chapter last week.

New Chapter for Mellifont Abbey

The monastic community, currently based at Our Lady of Silence Abbey in Roscrea, will relocate to Mellifont Abbey as part of a long-term arrangement.

In a statement, Dom Rufus Pound OCSO, Superior of the Roscrea community, confirmed that the move follows a period of reflection and discernment about the order’s future in Ireland.

He explained that in January 2025 the community — which includes members of the former Cistercian abbeys of Mount Melleray, Mount Saint Joseph and Mellifont — came together temporarily at Mount Saint Joseph Abbey in Roscrea.

That interim period allowed the monks time to consider where their permanent home should be located.

Decision After Prayerful Reflection

Dom Rufus said the community reached its decision after careful consultation and prayer.

“Following a formal vote of the Conventual Chapter, the monastic community decided to relocate to Mellifont Abbey, Co Louth, as our long-term home.”

The transition will not happen immediately. Instead, the move is expected to take place gradually over the next 18 months, allowing the community time to mark their departure from Roscrea and prepare for the move to Louth.

Gratitude to Roscrea Community

The Cistercian Order acknowledged that the decision would bring disappointment locally in Roscrea, where the monks have long been part of the community.

Dom Rufus expressed heartfelt thanks to the people of the area for their support and friendship over generations.

He also paid tribute to the staff at the abbey for their dedication and loyalty, saying the community would work closely with them during the transition to ensure that everyone is treated with fairness, dignity and care.

Strong Links with Cistercian College

Although the monks will leave the grounds they share with Cistercian College Roscrea, Dom Rufus emphasised that the bond between the order and the school will remain strong.

The community will continue to act as patrons of the college and remain committed to supporting its mission and ethos.

He praised the leadership of College President Colm Maloney and the board of management, saying they would act as custodians of the Cistercian heritage and values.

The monks also welcomed the college’s transition to a co-educational model, expressing pride in the institution’s legacy and its past pupils.

Historic Importance of Mellifont Abbey

The relocation is significant for County Louth, as Mellifont Abbey is one of the most historically important monastic sites in Ireland.

Founded in the 12th century, Mellifont was the first Cistercian monastery established in the country and played a key role in the spread of the order throughout Ireland.

The arrival of a monastic community there once again marks a symbolic continuation of that centuries-old tradition.

Looking to the Future

Dom Rufus concluded his statement by asking the people of Roscrea to keep the community in their prayers as they prepare for this major step.

“Difficult decisions require deep trust in God,” he said. “With that trust we move forward in faith, confident that the Lord has guided us on this path and will continue to do so in the years ahead.”

For Louth and the wider Ardee area, the relocation signals a new chapter for Mellifont Abbey as it once again becomes a living centre of monastic life.
