Louth to Benefit from €4.1m Housing Adaptation Grant Boost

People across County Louth are set to benefit from a major funding boost aimed at helping older residents and people with disabilities continue living independently in their own homes.

Fine Gael Councillor Robert Nash has welcomed the announcement that €4,139,549 has been allocated to Louth County Council under the Government’s Housing Adaptation Grants programme.

According to Cllr Nash, the funding will make a meaningful difference to the lives of many families across the county by supporting essential home adaptations that allow people to remain safely and comfortably in their own homes.

The grants are designed to assist older people and individuals with disabilities in making necessary improvements to their homes, such as installing stairlifts, access ramps, walk-in showers, and other mobility or safety modifications.

Cllr Nash said the latest funding allocation demonstrates the Government’s ongoing commitment to helping vulnerable residents maintain their independence and remain active members of their communities.

“These grants are crucial in enabling Louth County Council to support older and disabled individuals in adapting their homes to suit their needs,” he said.

“I have met many recipients here in Louth and have seen first-hand the positive difference that adaptation works have made to their lives at home.”

Significant national increase in funding with Louth to Benefit from €4.1m

The funding announcement forms part of a wider national increase in housing adaptation supports. The Government has increased the total funding available for the grants by 30% for 2026, bringing the overall allocation to €129.5 million.

This represents an additional €30 million compared with the previous year and continues a trend of steady increases in funding for the programme since 2014.

When contributions from local authorities are included, the projected total investment in housing adaptation grants for 2026 is expected to reach €152 million nationwide.

Cllr Nash said the increase will support approximately 17,000 grant claims across the country, many of which will directly benefit residents in Louth.

“It is fantastic to see a 30% funding increase in this grant for 2026,” he added.

“This will allow thousands of older and disabled people to make the changes they need in their homes so they can continue living independently and with dignity.”

Positive impact for local communities in Louth

In addition to improving the quality of life for residents, the programme is also expected to provide a boost to the local economy.

Cllr Nash noted that the adaptation works often require the services of local builders, plumbers, electricians and other tradespeople, creating valuable employment opportunities within the community.

“The local economy also benefits through the provision of employment for local tradespeople,” he said.

As demand for accessible housing continues to grow, the funding will help ensure that more households across Louth can access the supports needed to make their homes safer and more suitable for long-term living.

The Housing Adaptation Grants scheme remains one of the key supports available to homeowners in Louth seeking to improve accessibility and independence within their homes.
