ROAD SAFETY: Garda Warning Issued to Schools Over E-Scooter Laws

Garda Warning Issued to Ardee and Louth Schools Over E-Scooter Laws

A senior Garda in charge of roads policing has written to schools across County Louth warning students about the legal rules surrounding e-scooters, as Gardaí continue to seize high-speed scooters capable of travelling up to 80km/h.

The Assistant Commissioner for Roads Policing has contacted school communities to highlight the importance of understanding the law around e-scooter use and to help prevent students from unknowingly breaking road traffic laws.

The warning comes as Gardaí have increased the number of seizures of illegal e-scooters, particularly those capable of travelling well above the legal speed limit of 20km/h.

High-Speed Scooters Being Sold

It is understood that many sales representatives and online retailers are openly selling e-scooters capable of speeds between 45km/h and 80km/h, which are not legal for use on public roads under current Irish law.

Gardaí say many students and parents may not realise that these high-powered scooters are classified differently under road traffic legislation and can be subject to seizure if used illegally in public places.

Gardaí are urging parents and students in Ardee and across County Louth to check that any e-scooter being used is fully compliant with Irish road traffic laws.

E-Scooter Laws in Ireland

Under Irish law, e-scooters used in public places must meet specific requirements. The scooters must not exceed the speed limit of 20km/h and must meet safety regulations.

Gardaí have been increasing enforcement in recent months, particularly around schools, town centres and busy pedestrian areas, including locations across Ardee and Mid Louth.

Any e-scooter found to be non-compliant or capable of excessive speeds can be seized by Gardaí, and users may face penalties.

Appeal to Parents and Students

The letter to schools is aimed at informing students, parents and school communities about the rules and the risks associated with high-speed scooters.

Gardaí say the main concern is safety, particularly around schools where there are large numbers of pedestrians and traffic during busy morning and afternoon periods.

School communities across Ardee and County Louth are now being asked to help spread awareness of the rules to prevent further seizures and to ensure students are using e-scooters safely and legally.
