Military on Standby as Fuel Blockades Enter Fourth Day of Chaos
Traffic disruption on the M1 in Dundalk has intensified this Friday morning as national fuel protests enter their fourth day, with Junction 18 southbound currently obstructed by demonstrator convoys.
The protest, which began at 5:00 AM at Junction 20, saw a coordinated effort to travel southbound and block key interchanges. This action comes as the government warns that the Defence Forces remain on standby to assist Gardai in clearing heavy vehicles from major transport hubs and supply depots.
Fuel Shortages and “Panic Buying”
The impact of the days-long blockade of major supply depots in Cork, Galway, and Limerick is now being felt at the pumps. Fuels For Ireland has warned that “panic buying has taken hold,” with the number of dry forecourts expected to rise sharply from the “low double digits” reported on Thursday.
Critical sectors currently facing “life-and-death” threats include:
- Emergency Services: Fuel supplies for ambulances and fire engines are under threat.
- HSE Services: Patients are missing cancer treatments and dialysis due to road blockages.
- Agriculture: The delivery of vital animal feed and fertiliser has been severely restricted.
Gardai Enter “Enforcement Phase”
After days of negotiation, An Garda Siochana has confirmed it is entering an enforcement phase. Overnight, social media footage showed Gardai warning protesters near Rosslare Europort that they face immediate arrest if they do not disperse.
Despite the tension, some “positive engagement” allowed critical deliveries to leave Rosslare overnight. However, the standoff at Junction 18 in Dundalk remains a flashpoint for commuters in the North Louth region.
Search for a Resolution
Ger Hyland, president of the Irish Road Haulage Association, has offered to act as an “honest broker” between the government and the protesters. While a meeting is scheduled with the Government today, it remains unclear if any of the independent protesters will be included in the official talks.
