Kilcullen Point-Blitz Sinks Louth as Sligo Bounce Back in Style

Match Report: Sligo 1-31 Louth 0-10

Sligo 1-31
Louth 0-10
Louth’s Nickey Rackard Cup campaign hit a major speed bump at Markievicz Park this afternoon as a clinical Sligo side dismantled the “Wee County” in a one-sided encounter.

After the highs of an opening-round victory over Fermanagh, Paddy McArdle’s side were brought back to earth by a Sligo outfit hungry to avenge their own round-one defeat. Led by an inspired Andy Kilcullen, who finished the day with an incredible 0-12 haul, the hosts were superior in every department on a sublime playing surface.

First Half: The Kilcullen Show

Sligo set the tone from the opening whistle, racing into a five-point lead within eight minutes through Rory McHugh, Kilcullen, Finnian Cawley, and Conor Hanniffy. Louth struggled to find their rhythm in the sun-soaked stadium, waiting eight minutes for their first score—a Darren Geoghan free.

The gap only widened as the half progressed. Ruthless point-taking from Thomas Cawley and Paul O’Brien pushed the lead to 0-10 to 0-1. While Ricky McKeown and Conor Murphy registered scores for Louth, they were mere interruptions to Sligo’s momentum. By the half-hour mark, the O’Kelly-Lynch brothers had joined the scoring spree, leaving Louth trailing by 16 points at the interval.

“Sligo made sure to take their chances, heading into the break with a commanding 0-21 to 0-5 lead that effectively killed the contest.”

Rolston Denies Louth Revival

Louth emerged for the second half with renewed intent, with Michael O’Shea firing over the first score of the period. However, the visitors were haunted by missed opportunities, including two wides that could have reduced the deficit.

Any hope of a miraculous comeback was firmly extinguished by Sligo goalkeeper Adam Rolston. Just before the hour mark, Rolston produced two world-class saves in quick succession—first denying Sean Conneely from point-blank range and then remarkably recovering to block the follow-up effort.

Substitute Seals the Victory

With the game well out of Louth’s reach, Sligo substitute Patrick Walsh put the gloss on the scoreboard, firing in the game’s only goal from close range. Louth continued to fight, with Darren Geoghan attempting a goal from a close-range free, but the Sligo defense remained impenetrable.

Two final frees from Kilcullen wrapped up a comprehensive 24-point victory for Tom Hennessy’s side, who now look back in the hunt for championship honors.
