The high-stakes drama unfolded just after 8:00 PM on Friday evening right outside the pub doors on Bridge Street.
It all started with a simple, sharp gut feeling.
Tom and Dean were chatting outside the front of the premises when Tom spotted three men walking past, heading down towards the riverbank path. A short while later, only two of the men came walking back up the street. Instantly, alarm bells started ringing loudly in the publican’s head, prompting him to ask his doorman to walk down to the embankment with him to make sure absolutely nobody had run into serious trouble.

Dean noted that given the speed of the current, things likely wouldn’t have ended well at all had he and Tom not trusted their guts and headed down the bank when they did. He added that while you aren’t thinking about anything other than survival in the heat of the moment, the massive wave of relief afterward knowing the man was completely safe and okay was absolutely incredible.

“Gardaí attended a public order incident at Bridge Street, Ardee, Co Louth, at around 8:40pm on 29th May 2026. A man, aged in his 30s, was taken from the River Dee and subsequently arrested and detained at a station in the Garda North Western Region. He was later released without charge.
