The sharp awareness of a well-known local publican combined with the outstanding physical bravery of a doorman helped prevent an absolute tragedy along the River Dee banks.

True community guardians. Running off pure adrenaline.

Tom Muldoon, owner of the popular Brian Muldoon & Sons bar in town, and doorman Dean Enright—a healthcare worker from Blackrock—are being widely praised across the district today. The pair successfully pulled off a dramatic weekend rescue after a man fell heavily into the deep currents of the River Dee. The high-stakes drama unfolded just after 8:00 PM on Friday evening right outside the pub doors on Bridge Street.

It all started with a simple, sharp gut feeling.

Tom and Dean were chatting outside the front of the premises when Tom spotted three men walking past, heading down towards the riverbank path. A short while later, only two of the men came walking back up the street. Instantly, alarm bells started ringing loudly in the publican’s head, prompting him to ask his doorman to walk down to the embankment with him to make sure absolutely nobody had run into serious trouble.

🌊 A Life-Saving Sequence on the Embankment

When the two men reached the river’s edge, their worst fears were instantly confirmed as a fast-moving emergency took hold:

  • 📍 The First Discovery: They found a man lying face down at the very edge of the water. There is a significant, dangerous drop down to the riverbank at that specific spot.
  • 📞 Calling for Backup: Tom immediately dialed the emergency lines to alert local Garda patrols while they pulled the man safely clear of the immediate water line.
  • 💥 The Sudden Plunge: The casualty was highly agitated and disoriented. Upon standing up, he unfortunately lost his footing, fell straight back into the deep river, and began rapidly drifting out toward the middle of the current.
  • 🏊‍♂️ Dean’s Instinctive Dive: Seeing the man drifting in and out of consciousness, doorman Dean immediately plunged into the river, fought the currents to grab a secure hold of him, and bravely dragged him back to the dry bank.

“Your Instincts and Adrenaline Just Take Over”

A quiet sense of profound relief.

Speaking about the intense rescue, Dean Enright mentioned that he didn’t have any time to overthink the situation before diving in. He knew the casualty was in extreme danger, and his professional healthcare instincts simply took total charge of his movements. Though it was incredibly tough getting the unresponsive man back to the shore, Dean’s strong swimming skills successfully carried them both onto dry land. Both he and Tom remained positioned at the riverbank, keeping the casualty stable until emergency response vehicles arrived at the scene.

It easily could have ended in a terrible tragedy.

Dean noted that given the speed of the current, things likely wouldn’t have ended well at all had he and Tom not trusted their guts and headed down the bank when they did. He added that while you aren’t thinking about anything other than survival in the heat of the moment, the massive wave of relief afterward knowing the man was completely safe and okay was absolutely incredible.
