Major Progress for DART Extension to Drogheda: Doubling Capacity and Boosting Connectivity

Drogheda
Aaron Brady’s Appeal Rejected, Conviction Stands

The long-awaited DART extension to Drogheda has taken a significant step forward with new applications lodged with An Bord Pleanála. Iarnród Éireann has submitted a Railway Order application to extend the electrified DART network from Malahide to Drogheda MacBride Station, marking the third route of the DART+ programme to reach this stage.

This new line is set to nearly double the peak hourly capacity on the Northern route, increasing from 4,800 to 8,800 passengers. New battery-electric DART+ trains, which will operate on electricity under wires from the city centre to Malahide and continue under battery power to Drogheda, are expected to arrive in Ireland later this year and begin service in early 2026.

Transport Minister Eamon Ryan emphasized that the new route will offer a superior alternative to car travel, significantly enhancing capacity at peak times and supporting decarbonisation efforts. Jim Meade, Iarnród Éireann chief executive, celebrated the milestone as a transformative development for commuting in Dublin and surrounding areas, promoting sustainable and reliable travel.

The public, prescribed bodies, and directly impacted landowners and occupiers are invited to make submissions on the Railway Order from July 19 to September 20. Pending planning permission and funding, construction is expected to begin later this decade, with completion anticipated in around three years.
