End of an Era: Popular Postman Tony Boyle Hangs Up the Bag After Nearly Five Decades

Ardee has bid a fond farewell to one of its most recognizable faces as Tony Boyle officially retired from An Post this May after 47 years of exemplary service.

Based out of Churchtown, Tony’s career spanned nearly half a century, surviving the rain, the hail, and even the infamous 1979 postal strike that delayed his very first day on the job. His dedicated service across the Ardee and Reaghstown areas has seen tributes pour in from local residents who valued his daily presence and friendly nature.

⚽ “Post-Post” Life & Square United

Outside of his uniform, Tony is a noted figure in local sports as the dedicated club secretary for Square United FC. Upon news of his retirement, the club paid a lighthearted tribute on social media, joking that he can now transition to a “full-time” role at the club, starting with training on the pitch-marking machine!

Plans for the Future

Tony’s daughter confirmed the milestone on social media, describing it as a major transition into his “post-Post” life. While many would look to put their feet up, Tony plans to keep busy. Alongside spending more time with his family and tending to his garden, he has expressed a keen interest in finding a part-time job to stay active within the community he knows so well.

This heartwarming retirement follows a series of big updates for the town, including the major regeneration approved for Moorehall and the fundraising success of the Aclint Drama Group. Tony stands as a prime example of the “great talent” and resilience found in Mid-Louth—qualities that made him a favorite from the doorsteps of Reaghstown to the sidelines of Square United.

We at the Ardee Post wish Tony a long and healthy retirement. Whether he’s in the garden or at the club, we know he won’t stay idle for long!
