A proud day for the town. Locked in.

Independent Councillor Jim Tenanty will officially serve as the new Cathaoirleach of the Ardee Municipal District for the coming year. The experienced Independent representative, who has actively looked after the district parameters since 2014, was formally elected by his fellow chamber colleagues during a busy Annual General Meeting (AGM). He was officially proposed for the prestigious top job by Fianna Fáil’s John Sheridan, the outgoing Leas-Cathaoirleach.

He is a local man true to his roots.

Upon taking the chain of office, Cllr Tenanty expressed his immense pride in representing the area, stating clearly that he was proudly “born and bred” in Ardee and intends to work hard to fully represent everybody across our communities during his term. Meanwhile, the role of Leas-Cathaoirleach went to Fine Gael councillor Rachel Kerley, who was successfully elected to the deputy municipal post.

🏛️ Chamber Rulings & Political Feedback

The annual allocation of top municipal roles didn’t pass without a bit of standard political crossfire within the chamber rooms:

  • 🗳️ The Opposition Move: Long-standing Sinn Féin councillor Pearse McGeough also stood up to nominate himself for the Cathaoirleach position. However, his proposal failed to secure a vital second vote from colleagues, which ultimately prevented a formal ballot tracker from being triggered.
  • Deal Labelled: Cllr McGeough had previously labeled the dominant Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil voting pact a “grubby deal”. Despite his political criticisms of the voting layout, he warmly extended his best wishes to the new Cathaoirleach for the year ahead.

High Praise for Minogue as Ardee Castle Milestone Commences

Promoting the town on a global scale.

The AGM also featured a massive wave of praise and gratitude for the outgoing Cathaoirleach, Fine Gael’s Dolores Minogue. Cllr Tenanty led the tributes, pointing out that she took absolute pride in using every single opportunity to advocate for the town. He jokingly added that her loud promotion of local interests was famous in the main chamber, leaving Drogheda and Dundalk council colleagues constantly wondering when the next “Ardee bit” was coming.

A legacy project officially hitting the construction grid.

Cllr Sheridan warmly congratulated Cllr Minogue on matching her final weeks in the chair with the official, history-making contract signing for the **Ardee Castle regeneration project**. He noted that the historic landmark was an architectural treasure she had tirelessly championed for years, making the commencement of works an absolute milestone for her legacy.

🏰 Chief Executive Reflects on Regional Tracking

David Conway, Chief Executive of Louth County Council, was also present to mark the structural handover:

“I have witnessed personally the work she did in terms of promoting Ardee not only in this State but in The US over the St Patrick’s Day period. We’ve achieved a fair whack but there’s a lot to be done yet. The milestone was making sure that Ardee Castle has commenced.”
