Drogheda United Board Change as Byrne Steps Down

Drogheda United have confirmed a significant change at board level, with Joanna Byrne set to step down from her role as director and co-chair following instruction from club owners, the Trivela Group.

The decision was formally communicated in writing by Trivela, which holds authority under Byrne’s service agreement with Drogheda United FC Limited.

Statement from club ownership

In a statement, Trivela Group acknowledged Byrne’s contribution to the club over the years.

“We thank Ms Byrne for her service to Drogheda United and for the time and effort she devoted to the club during her tenure as a director and co-chair,” the statement read.

However, the ownership group made clear that the decision was based on governance concerns rather than any political views expressed by Byrne.

Breakdown in trust cited

According to Trivela, the move followed a statement made by Byrne regarding private discussions with club ownership.

The group said this led to a breakdown in the trust and confidence required for her to continue in the role, while also intensifying existing governance concerns that had already been under discussion.

The situation prompted an internal review within Trivela regarding the suitability of individuals holding both political roles and positions within football club governance.

That review concluded that such an arrangement was “not workable”, and that the issue should have been addressed earlier.

Interim director to be appointed to Drogheda United

Trivela confirmed that an interim director will be appointed in due course, as the club looks to move forward from the situation.

“No further comment will be made at this time,” the statement added.

Despite the circumstances surrounding her departure, the ownership group reiterated its appreciation for Byrne’s longstanding commitment to the club and its development.

Focus remains on club and community

The statement concluded by emphasising a shared commitment to the future of Drogheda United and its supporters.

“We hope to move forward from this matter, jointly unwavering in our support for the football club and the broader Drogheda community.”

The development marks a notable moment for Drogheda United off the pitch, as the club continues its League of Ireland campaign while also navigating changes at board level.
