Request Withdrawn: Mosque Proposals for Vacant Longwalk Warehouse Taken Off the Table Following Intense Local Feedback and Council Scrutiny

A highly debated planning application that had drawn significant attention across the northern corridors of the county has been officially closed by local developers.

The file is officially closed. Gone, for now.

The developers behind a proposed new mosque at the Longwalk in Dundalk have formally withdrawn their request asking for “Permission for the change of use from retail warehouse to community facility/place of worship”. The sudden move, logged on Wednesday, 3 June, leaves the future of the site completely up in the air. As of tonight, it remains entirely unknown whether the applicants plan to regroup and resubmit a modified, fresh bid down the line.

The planning saga originally kicked off back in March.

The application was formally lodged by the Yaqeen Islamic Community, targeting a prominent building formerly known as the Dundalk Paint Store, which is currently lying vacant. However, the proposal quickly hit a wall of intense procedural scrutiny last week when the Planning Authority stepped in to halt a definitive decision, which had been originally penciled in for the 25th of May.

❓ The Council’s Heavy Demands for Information

Planners from Louth County Council had issued a comprehensive letter to the Yaqeen Islamic Community Centre, demanding thorough evidence to check any potential impacts on neighboring homes and pedestrian safety:

  • ⏱️ Timetables & Seating: Planners wanted a complete, itemized timetable of all activities and weekly events, alongside the maximum seating capacity proposed for visitors.
  • 🔊 The Call to Prayer (Adhan): The council explicitly asked for clarity on whether the traditional call to prayer was intended to be broadcast externally using an amplified loudspeaker system.
  • 🚗 Footpath Parking Control: Heavy queries were raised regarding exactly how the facility intended to manage local parking, demands for noise impact documents, and clear plans to prevent visitors from parking illegally on adjacent footpaths.

Resident Association Campaigns Against Longwalk Changes

A highly organized community pushback.

The council’s demand for extra information followed a wave of formal submissions sent in by local residents. Banded together under the banner of the North End Residents Association, the group represents families living throughout the Long Walk, Demesne Road, McSwiney Street, Oliver Plunkett Park, O’Hanlon Park, Fr Murray Park, and the Laurels.

Their worries centered heavily on traffic control.

The association argued strongly in their council submissions that the change of use would cause a major, disruptive impact on parking and traffic flow throughout the narrow residential streets. They expressed specific concern about gridlock situations arising if multiple prayer services or community events were carried out throughout the day. Rather than submitting the extensive tracking evidence requested by the planners, the applicant ultimately decided to pull the plug on the file today.
