Dundalk’s Former Dunnes Stores Gets Green Light for Sports Entertainment Venue
Louth County Council has approved the transformation of the former Dunnes Stores on Park Street, Dundalk, into a sports entertainment premises. GR8 Entertainments Ltd received planning permission in May for the development, which includes outdoor seating and new signage on Park Street and River Lane. The venue aims to cater to the growing trend of “competitive socialising.”
Dundalk BIDS has been instrumental in reviving the site to boost commercial activity in the area. Town Centre Commercial Manager, Martin McElligott, expressed optimism about the development, noting the hard work by various stakeholders to break the deadlock on this important landmark site.
Michael Gunne from REA Gunne, a director on the board of BIDS, explained that “competitive socialising” is a modern twist on traditional pub games, revitalizing the leisure sector. These venues, featuring simple games, music, food, and drink, are designed to attract millennial and Gen Z customers with their vibrant, Instagram-friendly decor.
Recognizing the potential of Park Street, McElligott emphasized its diverse mix of retail, convenience, hospitality, and night-time economy providers.
