Dundalk’s Kate O’Connor Makes a Comeback in Heptathlon at Paris Olympics, Climbs to 19th Place

Dundalk’s own Kate O’Connor

Dundalk’s own Kate O’Connor, competing in her first-ever Olympic Games, has shown remarkable resilience and determination in the heptathlon at the Paris Olympics. The 23-year-old athlete, representing Ireland in a historic debut for the nation, initially faced a tough start in the women’s heptathlon.

O’Connor’s campaign began on a challenging note with a seventh-place finish in the 100m hurdles, clocking in at 14.08 seconds.

This time fell short of her personal best and season’s best, leaving her in a disappointing position. However, O’Connor, known for her grit, quickly turned her fortunes around in the subsequent event.

In the high jump, O’Connor delivered a season-best performance, clearing 1.77 meters on her third attempt. Though she narrowly missed out on reaching 1.80 meters, her effort was impressive enough to move her up three places in the overall standings. With only seven athletes outshining her in the high jump, her performance earned her 941 points and elevated her to 19th place among the 22 starters.

Having been cruelly denied a chance to compete in the Tokyo Olympics due to an injury, O’Connor’s successful high jump marks a significant turnaround and sets a positive tone for the remainder of her Games.

Kate O’Connor will continue her heptathlon journey today with the shot put event scheduled for 6:35 PM, followed by the 200m at 7:55 PM. As Ireland’s first-ever Olympian in the heptathlon, O’Connor’s progress is being watched with great anticipation and pride.
