Protest Convoys Bring Dundalk and M1 Motorway to a Standstill
Motorists across North Louth faced a morning of gridlock this Thursday as coordinated “slow-roll” protests by farmers and hauliers caused significant disruption on the M1 and surrounding Dundalk routes.
The demonstration saw convoys of heavy goods vehicles, tractors, and commercial drivers gather at Dundalk Retail Park from 7:00 AM before moving onto the region’s main traffic arteries, leading to widespread congestion.
M1 and Major Routes Affected
The M1 motorway quickly became the focal point of the disruption. Long tailbacks were reported heading northbound toward the border, with particular congestion noted at Junction 18 (Dundalk North).
As drivers attempted to bypass the motorway, secondary routes struggled to handle the diverted volume. Severe delays were reported on:
- The Castleblayney Road
- The Castletown Road
- Town centre approach roads
Impact on Local Commuters
The knock-on effect of the protest was felt across a wide area, with local roads struggling to cope as drivers diverted off the motorway. Traffic conditions remained challenging throughout the morning, particularly for those travelling to work, school, or cross-border destinations.
Commuters travelling during peak morning hours faced extended journey times, with many taking to social media to warn others to avoid the area entirely where possible.
Industry Concerns Highlighted
While the demonstration caused major disruption for the public, it also highlighted ongoing concerns within the transport and agricultural sectors. These industries have increasingly turned to coordinated road protests to draw attention to pressing regional issues.
Motorists in the area were advised to allow extra time for their journeys as delays only gradually eased later in the afternoon.
