Skerries 100 Abandoned After Fatal Accident: 80th Anniversary Tragedy
“The Loughshinny Motorcycle Supporters Club, organisers of the Skerries 100, regret to announce, a competitor has sadly passed away following a tragic accident that occurred during a Race which took place today.”
The 80th-anniversary celebrations of the historic Co Dublin road race have come to a sudden and tragic end. This year marked the return of the event to the calendar after a four-year hiatus caused by prohibitive insurance costs for road racing in the Republic of Ireland.
Earlier Successes on the Day
Before the abandonment, Michael Dunlop had claimed his ninth Skerries 100 victory, winning the Open Superbike race on his MD Racing BMW. Dunlop, who had qualified on pole, overcame a strong challenge from local rider Michael Sweeney, finishing 7.257 seconds ahead at the end of the six-lap race.
Brian McCormack secured the final rostrum spot, finishing third, followed by Marcus Simpson and Ryan Whitehall in the top five.
A Difficult Period for the Sport
Today’s tragedy follows a series of recent losses within the road racing community. Just last month, Cork racer James Walsh passed away following a crash at the Tandragee 100 in Co Armagh, and in May, Czech competitor Kamil Holan was killed during a qualifying crash at the North West 200.
The organisers have stated that further information will be released once the next of kin have been informed. Ardee Post extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the rider.
