Drogheda United delivered a sensational performance at Weavers Park, thrashing Sligo Rovers 7-0 to surge up to 8th place in the table, pulling themselves clear of the relegation zone. The victory, spearheaded by Frantz Pierrot’s brace, marked a statement of intent from Kevin Doherty’s men as they left Sligo Rovers reeling.

The win was a critical one for Drogheda United, who had been battling at the foot of the table. In stark contrast, Sligo Rovers arrived in Drogheda with five wins from their last six league games, positioning themselves as European qualification contenders. However, the Bit O’Red were completely outclassed on the night, suffering a blow to their aspirations and confidence.

The onslaught began early, with Douglas James-Taylor opening the scoring in the fourth minute. His well-taken volley set the tone for what would become a long and painful evening for Sligo’s goalkeeper, Ed McGinty. Drogheda quickly doubled their lead just seven minutes later, as Andrew Quinn capitalized on poor Sligo defending to tap in at the front post from a Shane Farrell corner.

Pierrot made it 3-0 before halftime, heading in a Conor Kane free-kick as Drogheda took complete control. It was the first time in over two years that Drogheda had gone into the break with a three-goal advantage in a league match.

After the interval, the floodgates remained open. Darragh Markey’s incredible 60-yard run led to a Pierrot header, which McGinty initially saved but could not prevent the Haitian from slotting in the rebound. Conor Kane then fired a low shot into the bottom corner, further compounding Sligo’s misery.

Drogheda were relentless, and Elicha Ahui added the sixth, scrambling the ball over the line. Adam Foley put the icing on the cake in injury time, completing the 7-0 rout after a surging run from Kane.

The result equals Drogheda’s biggest-ever Premier Division win, matching their seven-goal demolition of Waterford three years ago. However, this victory feels even more significant, given it came against a full-strength, experienced Sligo side rather than a youth team.

With 16 goals scored and none conceded in their last two games, Drogheda United are hitting their stride at a crucial point in the season. As they rise to 8th in the table, these are indeed heady days for the Drogs and their supporters.
